Great Yarmouth

  • Great Yarmouth

Great Yarmouth, often known to locals as Yarmouth, is a coastal town in Norfolk, England. It is located at the mouth of the River Yare, approximately 20 miles (30 km) east of Norwich.[2]

The town has been a seaside resort since 1760, and is the gateway from the Norfolk Broads to the North Sea. For hundreds of years it was a major fishing port, depending mainly on the herring fishery, but its fishing industry suffered a steep decline in the second half of the 20th century, and has now all but disappeared.[3] The discovery of oil in the North Sea in the 1960s led to a flourishing oil rig supply industry, and today it services offshore natural gas rigs. More recently, the development of renewable energy sources, especially offshore wind power, has created further opportunities for support services. A wind farm of 30 generators is within sight of the town on the Scroby Sands.

Hemsby is a village, seaside resort and civil parish in the county of Norfolk, England. It is situated some 7.5 mi (12.1 km) north of the town of Great Yarmouth.[1] In the 2001 census Hemsby had a population of 2,973 in 1,221 households; the population increased in the 2011 census to 3,275.[2] Hemsby borders the villages of Winterton-on-Sea and Scratby. For the purpose of local government, the parish is in the district of Great Yarmouth.[3]

Coastal erosion has destroyed a number of homes[4] and others are threatened. A Norfolk county map dated around 1610 shows a headland, called Winterton Ness, extending into the sea north-east of Hemsby. This headland has now almost entirely disappeared through erosion.
Hemsby village is a popular residential area and a vibrant holiday destination which merges with neighbouring Newport next to the sea. Fun attractions, a lovely beach, shops and eateries can be found in Hemsby and Newport.

  • Caister-on-Sea

Caister-on-Sea, also known colloquially as Caister, is a village in Norfolk in England, United Kingdom, close to the large town of Great Yarmouth. It is a seaside resort and busy holiday destination on the “Golden Mile”, with its main attraction being its sandy “Georgian Beach”. It is home to Great Yarmouth race course.[1] At the 2001 census it had a population of 8,756 and 3,970 households,[2] the population increasing to 8,901 at the 2011 Census.[3] It used to be served by Caister-on-Sea railway station. There was also a Caister Camp Halt, opened in 1933 to serve the holiday camp mentioned below. However, both were closed in 1959, after which Great Yarmouth railway station, 4 km (2.5 mi) to the south, became the nearest station.[4] The wind farm at Scroby Sands has thirty 2–megawatt wind turbines, 2.5 km (1.6 mi) off shore.
The village has plenty of shops, restaurants, cafés, pubs, supermarkets and other amenities, making it a particularly ideal self-catering base. The village is also home to Caister Lifeboat, a proudly independent coastal rescue crew with a vistor centre.
