Major facelift planned for Britannia Pier in Great Yarmouth

Photos Taken 11th Dec 2024 More To Come

One of the east coast’s most familiar leisure landmarks is in line for a major refurbishment, according to plans submitted to a council.

The owners of the Britannia Pier in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, want to upgrade the existing bars and facade.

Triangle Amusements said the plan follows investment already made since purchasing the pier in December 2022.

A decision will be made by Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s planning committee in the new year.

The current pier and theatre opened in 1958 after a series of devastating fires destroyed the original structure.

According to the planning documents, the design “provides a retro influenced contemporary solution to re-establish the west façade for the modern age together with additional space behind to serve the needs for the existing bar, restaurant, and amusements.

“The frontage introduces digital displays and information which in itself continues to evoke the traditional advertising and hoardings which has been a longstanding feature.”

The Britannia Pier opened in 1858, from where passenger steamers operated services along the East Coast to London.

Four fires gutted the pier’s pavilions in 1909, 1914, 1932 and and 1954.
